Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
