Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
